Your wedding day is one of the most photographed days of your life, and your smile will feature in almost every picture, from the ceremony to the very last dance. It is little wonder that so many couples decide to give their teeth a little extra attention in the months beforehand.
The best time to start depends on the treatment you choose. Teeth whitening can be completed in just a few weeks, veneers usually need a couple of months, and teeth straightening is best begun a year or more in advance.
Here at Gallions Reach, we have assisted many brides and grooms over the years, so let us walk you through the main options and the timeframes involved.
Start with a healthy, clean smile
Before any cosmetic treatment, we always recommend a check-up and a hygienist appointment. A healthy mouth is the foundation of a beautiful smile, and whitening or veneers will always look their best on clean, well-cared-for teeth.
- Book a check-up as early as you can, ideally twelve months before the wedding, so there is plenty of time to treat any decay or gum problems first.
- A scale and polish removes built-up plaque and surface staining, and can leave your teeth looking noticeably brighter on its own.
- A final freshen-up appointment a week or so before the wedding is a lovely way to make sure everything is camera-ready.
Professional teeth whitening
Teeth whitening is one of the most popular treatments among couples, and for good reason. It is straightforward, gentle, and makes a real difference in photographs.
At Gallions Reach, our whitening involves wearing a clear, custom-made tray filled with a professional whitening gel. Typically, you would wear the tray for one to two hours a day over a period of around two weeks, gradually lifting your teeth several shades lighter.
Timeframe: Allow around two to three weeks before the wedding. This gives you time to reach your desired shade and for any mild, temporary sensitivity to settle long before the day itself. We would suggest avoiding a last-minute appointment, as it leaves little room for touch-ups.
Dental veneers
If you have gaps, chips, or teeth that are particularly dark or out of line, veneers may be the answer. These are very thin, individually handmade porcelain shells that are bonded to the front of your teeth to improve their colour, shape, and position.
Veneers are a wonderful way to transform a smile, but they are not a rushed treatment. The process requires at least two visits: the first to prepare your teeth and match the shade, and the second to fit the finished veneers.
Timeframe: We recommend beginning the process at least two to three months before the wedding, and ideally longer. This allows time for your veneers to be carefully crafted, fitted, and adjusted if needed, so you are completely happy with the result.
Composite bonding
Composite bonding is a quicker, more affordable option for minor imperfections such as small chips, gaps, or worn edges. Tooth-coloured material is applied to the tooth and shaped to blend seamlessly with your natural smile, often in a single appointment.
Timeframe: Bonding can usually be completed in one visit, so a few weeks before the wedding is ample. Even so, we would always suggest leaving a little breathing room in case you would like any fine-tuning.
Clear braces and Invisalign
If straighter teeth are part of your wedding-day vision, clear braces or Invisalign are an excellent and discreet choice. These ‘invisible’ aligners gently move your teeth into a better position without the unsightly metal of traditional braces, and many can be removed for eating and cleaning.
Straightening teeth is a gradual process, so this is the treatment that needs the most forward planning of all.
Timeframe: Most cases take somewhere between six and twelve months, and sometimes longer. We would generally suggest beginning treatment around twelve to eighteen months before the wedding. Starting early also leaves time afterwards for whitening or bonding, which many couples like to add once their teeth are beautifully aligned.
Dental implants
If you have a missing or failing tooth, a dental implant offers a strong, natural-looking, and long-lasting replacement. While this is more of a restorative treatment than a purely cosmetic one, it can make an enormous difference to both your smile and your confidence.
Implants involve placing a small titanium post into the jawbone, which then needs time to heal and integrate before the final tooth is fitted.
Timeframe: Because healing takes time, implant treatment is usually best started a year ahead of the wedding. At your consultation, we will give you a tailored timeline based on your individual treatment.
A handy planning timeline
As a rough guide, here is when to think about each treatment:
- Twelve to eighteen months before: clear braces or Invisalign, and dental implants.
- Six months before: check-up, hygiene appointment, and any veneers.
- Two to three months before: veneers (at the latest) and composite bonding.
- Two to three weeks before: professional teeth whitening.
- One week before: a final scale and polish to look your very best.
Of course, every smile is different, and the perfect plan for you will depend on your goals and your timescale. If your wedding is only a few weeks away, please do not worry, as there is almost always something we can do to help you feel more confident.
