A common question I am asked by patients here at Gallions Reach is how often they should be booking in to see a dental hygienist. The honest answer is that it depends on your individual oral health, your lifestyle, and your risk of gum disease. That said, there are clear guidelines that can help you work out what is right for you.
The general rule for most patients
For most adults with healthy gums and a good home care routine, we recommend seeing a dental hygienist at least twice a year. This timing fits in nicely with your routine dental check-ups and gives your hygienist a chance to remove the plaque and tartar that builds up in areas your toothbrush and floss simply cannot reach.
Tartar (also known as calculus) hardens onto your teeth within days, and once it has set, it cannot be removed with brushing alone. A professional scale and polish every six months keeps your gums healthy, your breath fresh, and your teeth looking their best.
When you may need more frequent visits
Some patients benefit from seeing a hygienist every three to four months. Here at Gallions Reach, we may recommend more frequent appointments if you:
- Have a history of gum disease or are currently being treated for it
- Are prone to heavy plaque or tartar build-up
- Smoke or use tobacco products
- Have diabetes or another medical condition that affects your gum health
- Wear braces, aligners, or have dental implants
- Are pregnant, as hormonal changes can make gums more sensitive
- Notice persistent bad breath, bleeding gums, or receding gums
More frequent visits help us keep a close eye on any inflammation and stop small issues from developing into something more serious.
When less frequent visits may be appropriate
If you have excellent oral health, no history of gum problems, and a strong daily routine, your hygienist may suggest annual visits rather than six-monthly ones. This will always be based on a proper assessment of your gums and overall risk, so please do not skip appointments without speaking to us first.
Why regular hygienist visits are important
Skipping appointments often feels harmless in the short term, but the long-term effects can be significant. Without regular professional cleaning, plaque and tartar can lead to gingivitis and, eventually, periodontitis, which is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
The benefits of seeing your hygienist regularly include:
- Healthier, firmer gums
- Fresher breath
- A brighter, cleaner-looking smile
- Early detection of dental problems
- Personalised advice on brushing, flossing, and diet
- Lower risk of needing more complex (and costly) treatment later on
