Dental implants are one of the most reliable, natural-looking ways to replace missing teeth, and they can transform both the way you eat and the way you feel about your smile. One of the first questions patients often ask me, however, is a very sensible one: “Am I actually suitable for implants?”
The reassuring answer is that most people are. Modern techniques mean that many patients who were once told they were unsuitable can now be treated successfully. That said, a few important factors do determine whether implants are the right choice for you, and whether any groundwork is needed first. Below, I have explained what the team here at Gallions Reach looks for.
Good general health
An implant is a minor surgical procedure, so your overall health matters. Most healthy adults are excellent candidates. Certain conditions, however, can affect how well you heal and how securely the implant fuses with the bone.
We pay particular attention to:
- Diabetes, especially if it is poorly controlled, as this can slow healing.
- Conditions or medications that affect the immune system or the bones.
- Any history of head or neck radiotherapy.
Having one of these does not automatically rule you out. It simply means we plan more carefully and, where helpful, liaise with your doctor.
Healthy gums
Healthy gums are the foundation of a successful implant. Active gum disease is one of the most common reasons we recommend a short delay, because infection creates a hostile environment for healing and increases the risk of the implant failing.
The good news is that gum disease is very treatable. With regular visits to our hygienist and improved daily cleaning, we should be able to get you to a point where implants become a realistic option.
Enough healthy jawbone
An implant needs a stable foundation of bone to anchor into and fuse with, a process called osseointegration. When a tooth has been missing for some time, the jawbone in that area can gradually shrink, which sometimes leaves too little bone to support an implant directly.
If this applies to you, please do not be disheartened. A bone graft can rebuild the area and create a solid base, and for many patients this straightforward procedure opens the door to treatment. We assess your bone carefully using detailed 3D scans, so there are no surprises along the way.
A non-smoker, or a willingness to stop
I always raise this gently, because it really is important. Smoking and vaping are among the biggest risk factors for implant failure, as tobacco restricts blood flow to the gums and bone and slows healing considerably.
Smoking does not necessarily prevent treatment, but I am always honest with patients that stopping, even for a period around the surgery, greatly improves the chances of long-term success. Many people find their implant journey is a helpful motivation to give up for good.
Fully grown jaws
Implants are suitable for adults of almost any age, and I have happily treated patients well into their eighties. What matters is health rather than the number of candles on the birthday cake.
The one group we do ask to wait is younger patients whose jaws are still developing, usually those under eighteen. Placing an implant before growth is complete can affect how the teeth align later, so we prefer to wait until the jaw has finished maturing.
A commitment to aftercare
An implant is a long-term investment, and it rewards good daily care. Suitable candidates are people who are willing to brush and clean around the implant thoroughly and to attend regular check-ups and hygiene visits. Looked after well, a modern implant can last for many years, and often for decades.
The only way to know for certain
Every mouth is different, and no blog article can replace a proper assessment. The factors above give a helpful guide, but the surest way to find out whether implants are right for you is a thorough examination, including scans and a conversation about your health and your goals.
If you are considering replacing a missing tooth, or you have been told elsewhere that implants are not possible, I would warmly encourage you to seek a second opinion with us. We are often able to help.
To take the first step, please arrange a free consultation with our Implant Coordinator. It is a relaxed, no-obligation chance to ask questions and understand your options. Get in touch with the team at Gallions Reach today, and we will help you feel confident about every step of the journey.
