What’s involved in a dental check-up?

A dental check-up is a routine visit to the dentist aimed at maintaining good oral health and preventing dental issues. During the appointment, the dentist examines your teeth, gums, and mouth to check for any signs of cavities, gum disease, or other oral health problems. Regular check-ups help catch issues early, often before they become more serious or painful.

Check-ups often include:

  • A visual examination of teeth, gums, and mouth
  • X-rays, if needed, to check for hidden problems
  • Checking for signs of gum disease or oral cancer
  • Advice on brushing, flossing, and diet
  • Discussion of any concerns or treatment options
  • A referral to the hygienist if you have a buildup of plaque

Going for regular dental check-ups helps keep your teeth and gums healthy. Maintaining these appointments can save you from more complex procedures down the line, making it easier and less costly to take care of your oral health in the long run.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a dental check-up?
A check-up at Gallions Reach costs £45 for the examination. If it’s your first check-up with us, or your dentist advises that additional checks are required, there is a fee of £40 for a 2D Panoral X-ray (full mouth) or £10 for a Peri-apical X-ray (a small area of the mouth). 3D CT scans start at £150. When booking your examination, we require payment upfront to secure your appointment slot. You may lose your deposit if you fail to attend your appointment or cancel at short notice.
How often should you have a dental check-up?
Most people should have a check-up every six months, but the frequency can vary depending on individual oral health needs. Some may need to visit more often if they have specific dental issues, while others with excellent oral health might only need a check-up once a year. Your dentist will recommend the best schedule for you based on your personal risk factors.
How long does a dental check-up take?
A routine check-up usually takes between 15 to 30 minutes but can vary depending on the complexity of your dental health and the procedures needed.
What should I do before the check-up?
Before your check-up, brush and floss your teeth thoroughly to ensure your mouth is clean for the examination. Make a list of any dental concerns or symptoms you’ve noticed, such as tooth sensitivity or bleeding gums. Try to arrive a few minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork before your appointment. Avoid eating right before the visit, especially foods that may leave and residue in your mouth.
