What’s the difference between dental crowns and bridges?

Dental crowns are custom-made restorations used to repair and strengthen damaged or broken teeth. Our crowns are usually made from porcelain, sometimes reinforced with metal for added strength, and are carefully bonded to the remaining tooth structure. The crown covers the entire visible portion of the tooth, restoring its shape, size, and function. The process involves preparing the tooth, taking impressions, and fitting a temporary crown while the permanent one is made in a dental laboratory – usually taking about two to three weeks. Once fitted, crowns are durable, resistant to staining, and provide a long-lasting solution.

Dental bridges, on the other hand, are used to replace one or more missing teeth by literally “bridging” the gap between healthy teeth. A bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth which are held in place by crowns bonded to the natural teeth or implants on either side of the space. These supporting teeth, often prepared with crowns themselves, act as anchors for the bridge. While bridges are considered a more traditional option compared to implants, they are still a reliable and cost-effective solution in many cases. They are permanently fixed in place and can only be removed by a dentist. To maintain the strength and longevity of a dental bridge, it’s important to take good care of the supporting teeth and practice excellent oral hygiene.

Frequently asked questions

How much tooth is needed for a dental crown?

For a dental crown to be successful, there needs to be enough healthy tooth structure above the gum line to support and retain the crown securely. Generally, at least 2 millimetres of natural tooth structure is ideal around the entire circumference of the tooth. If too much tooth is missing due to decay or damage, additional procedures like a core build-up or a post may be necessary to provide a stable foundation for the crown.

How much do crowns and bridges cost?

A bonded crown starts at £600, and a bridge is £600 per unit. A single tooth adhesive bridge is £700.

How long does a dental crown last?

A crown can last between 10 and 15 years, but with good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, it can often last longer. Factors like the material used, the location of the crown in your mouth, your bite, and habits such as teeth grinding can all affect its lifespan. Taking care of your crown by brushing, flossing, and avoiding very hard or sticky foods can help extend its durability.

How is a dental crown fitted?

Your crown is fitted over two appointments. First, your dentist prepares the tooth by removing any damaged areas and shaping it to create space for the crown. An impression is then taken and sent to a dental laboratory, where the custom crown is made. In the meantime, a temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth. At the second appointment, usually after 2 to 3 weeks, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent one is carefully fitted, adjusted, and securely bonded into place.

What are crowns and bridges made of?

They are made from high-quality materials such as porcelain, metal alloys, or a combination of both. Most modern crowns are crafted from porcelain for a natural, tooth-like appearance and are often reinforced with metal to increase their strength, especially when multiple crowns are linked together to form a bridge. Dental bridges also use materials like porcelain, gold, or metal alloys to create durable, long-lasting restorations. These materials are chosen for their strength, durability, and ability to blend seamlessly with natural teeth.
