Maintain healthy teeth with regular visits to our dental hygienists
We strongly recommend that you undergo scaling/cleaning with a hygienist at least twice a year, alongside regular dental check-ups.
Patients choose Gallions Reach for their general dentistry and hygienist appointments as:
- We are within walking distance of the new Abbey Wood Station on the Elizabeth Line – a 30-minute walk or 10 minutes on a connecting bus. It’s easy to get to us from Greenwich.
- We have a superbly equipped, multi-surgery clinic – we recently completed a major refurbishment offering patients an exceptional experience from the moment they arrive.
- Our dental hygienists have many years of experience delivering a high standard of care – as well as providing professional cleaning for your teeth they also provide expert advice on diet and preventing dental decay.
- You can purchase recommended dental hygiene products on-site with us – if our hygienists recommend a particular product, you can purchase it from our reception after your appointment has finished.
What do dental hygienists do?

At Gallions Reach, we recognise that every patient is different. As such, our team will tailor a dental treatment plan that is unique to your needs, helping you to maintain healthy gums and teeth.

Frequently asked questions
When can I book a hygienist appointment?
We offer dental hygienist appointments Monday to Friday. Sessions typically last around 25 minutes. You may need a dental check-up before we can offer you a hygienist session. Contact our support team to discuss this.
Why is it important to see a hygienist regularly?
Plaque is a sticky, soft film produced by oral bacteria and it constantly accumulates. If you fail to remove it by properly brushing your teeth on a regular basis, it will harden and turn to calculus (also called tartar). When calculus forms, it is no longer possible to remove it at home. It will need to be removed by a qualified dental hygienist, using specialist tools. Even if you are good at maintaining your oral hygiene, it is still advisable to see a hygienist at least twice per year for assistance with maintaining your teeth.
What happens if I do not see a hygienist regularly?
If you allow calculus and plaque to build up over prolonged periods, this will lead to inflammation and gum (periodontal) disease. If you seek treatment in the early stages of gum disease, its effects are reversible and the gum tissue will heal. However, left too long, gum disease can result in permanent bone damage, requiring more advanced treatments and deep cleaning solutions. This is why it is so important to see a dental hygienist on a regular basis.
